Companies often talk about work/life balance because they know that if you have this down, you’ll be more productive. It’s common to have two out of the three but if one is out of whack, then the other two can’t work properly. So how do you achieve this balance?
1. Take More Exercise
It’s been shown that taking some form of exercise will lighten your mood and lower anxiety. It also speeds up the creation of brain cells. Yoga is very relaxing and is wonderful for bringing your body and mind together. For full mind, body and spirit balancing, meditate while you do yoga.
Studies have shown that regular meditation can lower stress and improve physical health. It also increases the size of your hippocampus (the area of your brain used for storing memory) so your mind will be sharper.
If you’re under stress (and who isn’t these days) your physical body may well be rebelling by making you physically ill.
3. Be Grateful
This is all about your internal dialogue which has a huge effect on mind, body and spirit. If you’re constantly hearing a little voice that’s saying you hate your life or job (or whatever) you need to change that. When you catch yourself thinking a negative thought, stop and count your blessings. This can retrain your brain so that eventually, it will drop the pathways to negatives as it recognises that you’re not using them any more.
4. Smile More
If you’re stressed and you haven’t been smiling much, get into the habit by making yourself smile in the shower or in your car. It will feel weird at first but will come more naturally with time.
5. Get Plenty of Sleep
Sleep deprivation is used as torture. We hardly need say more – except that your body needs time to recover from the day and make you refreshed for the next one. Getting an early night is more helpful than having a lie in.
6. Breathe Deeply
When you’re stressed you take shallow breaths. This increases the stress because you’re not getting enough oxygen into your lungs. Be conscious of your breathing especially at stressful times. Stop and take 3 or 4 deep breaths. For maximum benefit, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
7. Ground Yourself
Have you ever said to anyone “Sorry – I was miles away…” Grounding means connecting with the earth. If your body stressed then your mind and spirit can attempt to take you out of that situation. To bring everything back into balance, get your feet on the ground – literally. Walking barefoot (indoors or preferably outdoors) is great for this. Taking a walk in nature is also a good way of grounding.
8. Eat Well
If you don’t put gas in your car it won’t run. The same goes for your body. If you don’t give it fuel it can’t perform efficiently. Yet many of us are guilty of skipping meals or grabbing fast food that doesn’t sustain energy levels. If nothing else, add dark greens to your diet as they’re loaded with vitamins and minerals. Growing your own is even better – it can be grounding and relaxing.
9. Spend More Time with Loved Ones
Some people are draining to be around so get energy back. Loved ones can be friends, family or pets. Giving energy to someone you love is a positive thing and you will get positive energy back.
10. Live your Passion
Do you have a hobby that you love but never have time for? Schedule it into your week and enjoy guilt-free sessions of relaxation and pleasure. What you love is part of who you are so don’t ignore it.
Give it a try
If you can get all three balanced, you will achieve your full potential and enjoy life more.
Give it a go – and you may be surprised how much better you feel in just a few days.
