If you’re about to give up trying to find Healthy places to go eat with your kids take a few moments to read this and you might change your mind. If you despair at trying to get healthy food into your offspring instead of fast food laden with calories and fat the results of a recent survey may surprise you.
The survey, carried out by a firm in Chicago (Y-Pulse) came up with some unexpected results. It seems that kids are more food savvy than we realised. The feedback was that they want to have more choice. They also love creating their own dishes so salad bars were actually popular.
When the children were questioned about their definition of ‘healthy food’ they mean food that is homemade and above all, fresh. They also expressed a high interest in knowing where the food comes from. Chicken was a hot favourite with spicy foods and salsas close behind.
Their wishes are being met. In 2011, the National Restaurant Association’s (NRA) launched their Kids Live Well program. This is to promote easily available healthy eating specifically aimed at kids. They have already signed up over 41,000 eating establishments who are working to provide healthier options for kids. You may be surprised to know that large chains who have already got involved include Burger King, Wendy’s, Sonic, Chick-fil-A and Arbys. All of the participants in the Kids Live Well program have to abide by the criteria set by the NRA who have set specific limits on all the no-nos, like calories, sugar, salt and of course, fat.

The CDC (Centres For Disease Control and Prevention) report that in the past thirty years, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children. In 1980, only 7% of six to eleven year olds were classed as obese – compared with a whopping 18% in 2012.
So now you know that there are healthy places to eat with your kids, go out and enjoy great meals without the guilt – because we mothers have enough of that already!
